Those arrested in the Saturday roundup included Sharif Hasan, a member of the royal family, and Bassem Awadullah, a former senior official in Jordan's Royal Hashemite Court who had also served as special Jordanian representative to the Saudi government.

On the subject of talks this coming week about the Iranian nuclear deal, Prince Faisal said Saudi Arabia had been given assurances that any new deal would be more demanding of Iran when it comes to its ballistic missile capabilities and its support for armed groups in the region.

The United Arab Emirates on Sunday voiced its "full solidarity" with Jordan.

"He also stressed his confidence in the leadership's wisdom and its keenness to secure the country's stability in parallel with the respect for the constitution and the law".

Hamzah, 41, is the son of Hussein and Queen Noor, his American-born fourth wife. King Abdullah dismissed Prince Hamzah as heir to the throne in 2004, in a move that consolidated his power. Awadallah is a former Cabinet minister and one-time head of the royal court.

The prince initially met the Chairman of Joint Chief of Staffs who warned the prince against carrying out activities that pose a threat to the country.

Despite having little oil wealth and severely lacking water, the kingdom has managed to survive repeated wars in the region which have sent waves of refugees across its borders.
