India reports record 200,000 new covid-19 cases as outbreak spreads

Total cases reached almost 14.3 million, second only to the United States which has reported more than 31 million infections.

The surge was the seventh record daily increase in the last eight days. Four of them are in Maharashtra - which has reported the lion's share of total cases in India - therefore it makes sense that the majority of vaccines would go to the state.

India's daily deaths due to Covid are also rising with 1,038 new deaths reported on Thursday, the second consecutive day with over a thousand deaths.

"We are a 900-bed hospital, but there are about 60 patients waiting and we don't have space for them".

Days after declaring 14 private hospitals in the city as "full COVID-19" facilities, the Delhi government on Wednesday revised its decision to allow certain beds to be used for non-COVID patients as well.

"We are definitely over-burdened. All sick patients, all severe patients", Kumar added.

India reported over 1,000 deaths from the virus on Thursday, shy of the daily peak a year ago, but epidemiologists warn that fatalities are set to rise.

"Over a period of time, people have adopted a casual approach", Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said at New Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences on Friday.

The 1,038 new fatalities include 278 from Maharashtra, 120 from Chhattisgarh, 104 from Delhi, 73 from Gujarat, 67 from Uttar Pradesh, 63 from Punjab, 51 from Madhya Pradesh, 38 from Karnataka, 31 from Jharkhand, 29 from Rajasthan, 25 from Tamil Nadu, 24 from West Bengal, 22 from Kerala, 21 from Bihar, 18 each from Andhra Pradesh and Haryana, 13 each from Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.

Outside the hospital's mortuary, weeping relatives gathered in the hot sun to wait for the bodies of loved ones to be released.

Forty-year-old Prashant Mehra said he had to pay a broker for preferential treatment before he could get his 90-year-old grandfather admitted to an overstretched government hospital.

Several senior leaders and opposition lawmakers, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress's Rahul Gandhi, have been holding large rallies for supporters amid elections in five regions, including West Bengal.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra, the worst-hit state in the country, witnessed a spike in Thursday's fresh infections as compared to Wednesday's COVID-19 cases.
