A closer look at the proposed breakaway threatening European football

"By bringing together the world's greatest clubs and players to play each other throughout the season, the Super League will open a new chapter for European football, ensuring world-class competition and facilities, and increased financial support for the wider football pyramid".

Manchester United and Tottenham are among the clubs reported to be supporting the European Super League.

"I'm not against the modernisation of football competitions, with have the Premier League, we have the Champions League", he said.

None of these clubs have made any official statement so far, but there have been rumours about a possible imminent announcement in coming days. The top eight teams would qualify automatically for the knockout stages, with those ranked ninth to 24th playing off for the final eight spots.

Serie A clubs last month awarded DAZN the main domestic rights to screen Italy's top-flight championship for the next three seasons.

The meeting, called by league president Paolo Dal Pino, comes ahead of Monday's UEFA executive committee at which plans to expand and reform the Champions League, changing the format from 2024, are expected to be agreed.

The English Football Association warned a European Super League would hurt football "at all levels" and said it was ready to take legal action as a clutch of elite clubs appeared poised to announce their involvement.

The statement added that bodies would consider all measures to oppose the Super League, "both judicial and sporting".

"We note Federation Internationale de Football Association confirmed earlier this year that they and the six confederations would not recognise any such competition and, as such, any player or club involved may not be permitted to participate in any official competition which falls within the auspices of Federation Internationale de Football Association or their respective confederation".

'I'm not sure Manchester United are involved in this, as I am not part of the decision making process, ' he added.

The report suggested that each permanent member of the proposed breakaway league, which would begin in 2022, has been promised €350 million ($425 million) with JPMorgan Chase & Co.in discussions to help finance the league.

"They should deduct all six teams that have signed up to it". The letter, signed by 17 fans' groups from 14 teams whose clubs are in the ECA, including Ajax, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, said it was a "blatant power grab" and would "wreck domestic calendars".

EFL chairman Rick Parry says it would be a "major threat" to the Carabao Cup and the FA also wrote to UEFA to express its concerns.
