Two weeks before trial testimony began, Minneapolis agreed to pay $27 million to settle a civil lawsuit brought by Floyd's family over his death.

"A measure of justice isn't the same as equal justice", she said. "We have not forgotten that the other three officers who played their own roles in the death of George Floyd must still be held accountable for their actions, as well".

Floyd's death in May 2020 touched off nationwide protests against police killings of Black people, including in MA, where most demonstrations were peaceful save for one protest that was calm throughout the day but then gave way to violence and looting as the night wore on.

President Joe Biden also weighed in on Tuesday, saying that he was "praying" that Chauvin would be convicted, describing the evidence as "overwhelming".

He said that he had spoken to Mr Floyd's family on Monday and "can only imagine the pressure and anxiety they're feeling".

Harris, in her remarks following the guilty verdict, boosted the legislation as part of Floyd's legacy. We need true justice. In a confrontation captured on video, Chauvin, who is white, pushed his knee into the neck of Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man in handcuffs, for more than nine minutes on May 25, 2020, as he and three fellow officers arrested Floyd, who was accused of using a fake $20 bill to buy cigarettes at a grocery store. "This case is a turning point in American history for accountability of law enforcement and sends a clear message we hope is heard clearly in every city and every state". "It requires us to recognise that millions of our friends, family, and fellow citizens live in fear that their next encounter with law enforcement could be their last", the former United States president wrote in a statement.

The anonymous jury deliberated for more than 10 hours over two days, and without asking the judge a single question, filed back into the Hennepin County Government Center on Tuesday afternoon to a courtroom under tight security and Covid-19 restrictions.

According to a website dedicated to the protests, demonstrations were being planned in 77 Russian cities as of Monday afternoon. On Tuesday morning the team was once again barred from seeing him, but was told to try again later in the day.

On the stand, Dr. Tobin said he had watched the arrest video footage hundreds of times, pointing to the exact moment Mr. Floyd lost consciousness and was depleted of oxygen, around three minutes before Mr. Chauvin got off him when Mr. Floyd's eyes stopped flickering.

"I think everybody in the country is anxiously awaiting that decision, and we are, too", Baker said before the verdict.

MA had braced earlier in the day for the possibility of protests.

"Massachusetts had one bad day, all the way through all the activity of last summer", Baker said.

People walking nearby the area shortly after the verdict were both shocked and relieved.

"He literally has no remorse or anything in his expressions", Tappin said."It just kind of made me pretty sad for humanity that this is even a debate".

"'I can't breathe.' We can't let those words die with him". They covered the potential pitfalls with a battery of seasoned medical experts who ruled out a drug overdose and use-of-force experts and senior law-enforcement figures, including the city's police chief, who said the prolonged restraint went against officer policy and training.
