Ontario’s new COVID-19 cases below 3,500, another 22 deaths reported

That is twice the number of confirmed variant cases just one week ago.

Ontario is lowering the eligibility age for the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine to 40 on Tuesday, meaning a new cohort of people will be able to get the shot at a local pharmacy or family doctor's office.

An average of nearly 1,200 people are now in intensive care daily with COVID-19, about half of them on ventilators. But hospitalizations, critical care admissions and patients on a ventilator all rose overnight, prompting new warnings from the Ontario COVID-19 Science Advisory Table that hospitals are on the brink.

Meanwhile, New Brunswick has reported the third Canadian case of someone developing a rare form of blood clot after receiving this vaccine.

A new field hospital at Sunnybrook Hospital is opening beds this week with a total of 20 beds being available by the end of the month.

The NDP leader noted that in Toronto, the wealthiest neighbourhoods have higher rates of vaccination than neighbourhoods where racialized and working-class people live - areas that have higher levels of COVID-19 positivity.

Provincial data showed 90,409 doses of vaccine put into arms in the previous day, although that number was artificially low due to reporting issues related to a large cellphone outage.

Bethlenfalvy says, "Ontario needs a stronger federal partner to ensure we can improve wait times, reduce surgery backlogs and provide access to more beds and better treatments and come out of the pandemic with a stronger, more resilient health care system".

Health Minister Christine Elliott said the province has now administered approximately 3.9 million doses of vaccine.

As of tomorrow, Ontario residents aged 40 and up can book an appointment to get an Oxford-AstraZeneca shot.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 2,855.2 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

Peel Public Health has issued an order that will force any business with five or more cases of the virus in the last 14 days to temporarily shut down.
