"BCI is on the scene conducting an independent investigation.as they do with all CPD-involved shootings", Ginther said. "She could be my grandchild", said Ned Pettus, the Columbus director of public safety.

During the press conference, the department showed bodycam footage of the shooting.

The girl has since been identified by a family member as Ma'Khia Bryant, reported local outlet 10TV.

Woods said state law allows police to use deadly force to protect themselves or others, and investigators will determine whether this shooting was such an instance.

The shooting in a neighbourhood on the city's south-east side happened to coincide with announcement of the guilty verdict by a Minneapolis jury against a former police officer charged with murdering George Floyd by kneeling on his neck during an arrest past year.

In the hours since Makiyah's death, protestors have taken to the streets to demand justice for the teen.

Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther said the girl's death was a "horrible, heartbreaking situation".

The Delhi government is constantly working to augment the number of oxygen beds and ICU facilities amid the crisis, he said. The Delhi government has an app that shows the number of occupied or vacant beds available at hospitals in realtime.

Ben Crump, the prominent civil rights lawyer representing the Floyd family, weighed in on Twitter: "As we breathed a collective sigh of relief today, a community in Columbus felt the sting of another police shooting", he wrote, mourning another "child lost".

A woman identified in the Columbia Dispatch account as the slain girl's aunt, Hazel Bryant, told the newspaper the teenager lived in a foster home and became involved in an altercation with someone at the residence. One is performing chest compressions.

Graham recalled hearing four gunshots just outside his southeast Columbus home.

Police released the body camera footage of the incident that showed a young female tackling another female to the ground with what appeared to be a knife in her hand. It also took place less than 5 miles from where the funeral for Andre Hill, who was killed by another Columbus police officer in December, was held earlier this year. "We know we can't provide every answer, but it's important that we can answer some questions tonight". "When police are killed, the person is brought in and justice is served", Graham said.

Police said, and the slow motion video appeared to show, that the officer shot the teen just as she was "attempting to stab the first female that lands on the ground and then the second female that is pushed onto the vehicle".

"The neighborhood has definitely went through its changes, but nothing like this", Shepherd said of the shooting. "Because as you're getting one phone call that he was guilty, I'm getting the next phone call that this is happening in my neighbourhood".
