The former Minneapolis police officer was convicted on murder and manslaughter charges in the death of George Floyd, the Black man whose neck he pinned to the ground with his knee for almost 10 minutes.

Officers had responded to an attempted stabbing call when police shot the girl at about 4.45pm local time, police said.

Video taken at the scene shortly after the shooting shows two police officers kneeling over the girl, who is lying near a auto at the end of a driveway.

The lead sentence of the story now reads, "A 16-year-old [sic] Black girl was fatally shot by an officer outside her home after she called the police for help on Tuesday afternoon, according to her family".

The officer tells her to "get down" as she grapples with the woman in pink, who is leaning against the side of the auto and and trying to dodge her blade.

The girl was identified as 16-year-old Ma'Khia Bryant by her mother Paula and the Franklin County Children's Services (FCCS).

The Columbus Dispatch reported that demonstrators had gathered near the scene of the shooting earlier in the day.

"This afternoon a young woman tragically lost her life", Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther tweeted.

Ginther later said at the news conference, "We know based on this footage the officer took action to protect another young girl in our community". The officer shouts several times to get down. She was later pronounced dead, WBNS reported.

Bryant said Ma'Khia had been living in a foster home and that several adult women came to the home and began an altercation with her, after which Ma'Khia called police for help, as well as her biological father and grandmother, the Daily Beast said. "But a family is grieving tonight". Interim Police Chief Michael Woods said the quick release was because "we understand the public's need, desire and expectation to have transparency". A black-handled blade similar to a kitchen knife or steak knife lies on the sidewalk next to her.
