India's capital New Delhi on Sunday extended its lockdown, as the country's COVID-19 crisis grew with infections and deaths hitting record highs.

THE UNITED STATES will "immediately" make supplies of vaccine-production material, as well as therapeutics, tests, ventilators and protective equipment available to India as the South Asian giant faces a Covid-19 surge, the White House said Sunday.

The country's total tally of infections stands at 16.96 million and deaths 192,311 after 2,767 more died overnight, health ministry data showed. "We're looking at what is going to be done with some of the vaccines that we are not using", the president said on Wednesday. Price said. "It is not only in the USA interest to see Americans vaccinated, but it is in the interests of the rest of the world to see Americans vaccinated".

The White House used the summit to promote global cooperation in the fight against climate change and declared that the United States would help vulnerable countries, including India, deal with the ravages of rising temperatures. Over the past week, the Biden administration had faced growing criticism for not doing and saying enough about the situation in India.

Amid a rise in the number of COVID-19 cases across the country, an Indian think tank has urged US President Joe Biden's administration to ease the global vaccine supply chain.

But it did not mention whether the USA would send millions of surplus AstraZeneca vaccine doses to India, after top United States pandemic adviser Anthony Fauci said Sunday that would be considered.

Speaking on RTÉ Radio this afternoon, Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney said that Ireland needs to work with the European Union and the USA to provide help to India.

Health Minister Christine Elliott said the province has now administered approximately 3.9 million doses of vaccine . An average of nearly 1,200 people are now in intensive care daily with COVID-19, about half of them on ventilators.

The United Kingdom also joined in the efforts, with Prime Minister Johnson announcing the country was sending life-saving medical equipment to India, including ventilators and oxygen concentrators: "Vital medical equipment, including hundreds of oxygen concentrators and ventilators, is now on its way from the UK to India to support efforts to prevent the tragic loss of life from this bad virus".

"Our hearts go out to the Indian people in the midst of the horrific Covid-19 outbreak", Blinken said in a tweet on Saturday night. In Delhi, there have been reports of overwhelmed hospital.

The country of 1.3 billion people is on the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe, Ashish Jha, dean of the Brown University School of Public Health, warned in an op-ed published Saturday in the Washington Post.

Price then said, "What I will say broadly is that the United States first and foremost is engaged in an ambitious and effective and, so far, successful effort to vaccinate the American people".

It will also deploy experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and USAID to work with the Indian government, and help fast-track the mobilization of emergency resources available to India through the Global Fund.

Arch-foe Pakistan offered medical equipment and supplies after Prime Minister Imran Khan tweeted prayers for a "speedy recovery".

The surge is expected to peak in mid-May with the daily count of infections reaching half a million, the Indian Express said citing an internal government assessment. Meanwhile, a central government official told Reuters earlier this week that the Biden administration was considering India's request for lifting the ban and the matter would be acted upon "at the earliest".
