USA federal investigators executed search warrants Wednesday morning at the Manhattan home and office of Rudy Giuliani, former US president Donald Trump's attorney, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press.

"Mr. Giuliani respects the law, and he can demonstrate that his conduct as a lawyer and a citizen was absolutely legal and ethical", the statement said.

The Justice Department was widely expected to revisit the issue once Attorney-General Merrick Garland assumed office. Giuliani hasn't been charged and has denied wrongdoing.

Mr Giuliani and a spokesman for Mr Trump did not immediately respond to media requests for comment.

Investigators executed warrants on Wednesday morning (Late Wednesday or early Thursday AEST) at Mr Giuliani's home on Madison Avenue and his office on Park Avenue and seized electronic devices, a person familiar with the investigation told the AP.

The search warrant and seizure of electronic devices are a major turning point in the probes against Giuliani - and could have an impact on former President Trump.

The search of Giuliani's apartment was first reported by the New York Times.

A lawyer for Giuliani, Bob Costello, confirmed that a search warrant had been executed.

Indian hospitals turn away patients in COVID-19 'tsunami'
Social media is full of stories of desperate people trying to find oxygen or a hospital bed for their friends and family. India first surpassed the US's daily record of 297,430 on Thursday, when it announced just under 315,000 new cases.

The full scope of the investigation is unclear, but it at least partly involves Rudy Giuliani's dealings in Ukraine, law enforcement officials have confirmed.

The warrant was in relation to an ongoing probe led by federal prosecutors from the Southern District of NY regarding Giuliani's alleged lobbying efforts overseas during the Trump presidency, which was a key focus of the first impeachment case against then-President Trump. He told the Wall Street Journal that agents showed up at dawn on Wednesday and castigated the raids as "legal thuggery".

As part of the same investigation, agents on Wednesday also searched the home of Victoria Toensing, a lawyer and Giuliani ally, according to a spokesperson for Toensing.

Prosecutors are seeking to determine whether Giuliani illegally lobbied the Trump administration on behalf of powerful Ukrainians while he was seeking dirt on Biden and his son, Hunter, the law enforcement official said.

The Foreign Agents Registration Act requires people to notify the State Department if they are acting as a foreign agent on behalf of another nation. Officials with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of NY also declined to comment. "I didn't use most of it", Solomon said of Giuliani. Both pleaded not guilty.

In a statement released through his lawyer, Giuliani accused federal authorities of a "corrupt double standard", invoking allegations he's pushed against prominent Democrats, and said that the Justice Department was "running rough shod over the constitutional rights of anyone involved in, or legally defending, former President Donald J. Trump".

Giuliani, a two-term mayor of NY, rose to worldwide prominence after he steered the city through tragedy on September 11, 2001, when two planes piloted by terrorists crashed into the World Trade Center.
