Health officials are baffled by the case of the man, given he had no known links to high-risk jobs or people.

New Zealand has announced it will suspend quarantine-free travel with one Australian state in light of new cases of community transmission.

"I have made the decision to pause flights from New South Wales for a period of 48 hours", NZ Minister for COVID-19 Response Chris Hipkins said.

"We do acknowledge this has the potential to disrupt people's travel", he said, adding that the pause would be extended if necessary.

A man who lives in Sydney's eastern suburbs has been diagnosed with Covid-19.

Drinkers in bars must also be seated and just two visitors will be allowed for residents in aged care homes.

Speedy tracing systems, movement curbs and border restrictions have largely reined in the spread of COVID-19 in Australia, which has recorded 29,865 cases and 910 deaths since the pandemic began.

The federal government is now under some pressure to overturn a temporary travel ban on travellers, including its own citizens, from COVID-ravaged India.

"We are not going to commit to that at this point", Morrison told radio station 3AW on Thursday.
