A four-year-old girl and her mother have been shot and injured in Times Square, the New York Police Department say. A 23-year-old woman from Rhode Island was sightseeing when she was shot in the leg, and a 43-year-old woman form New Jersey was shot in the foot, reports indicate.

It's understood that shots were fired after an argument erupted between a group of four men, when one pulled out a gun.

The NYPD has released a photo and video of a person of interest connected to the shooting. The police are yet to arreste anyone in connection with this shooting but a person of interest was being sought by NYPD for questioning, police Commissioner Dermot Shea said. How many more people have to be injured?

The young girl was shot in the leg and is undergoing surgery at Bellevue Hospital, NYPD Commissioner Dermot O'Shea told reporters.

Ms Magrinat told the New York Post she was with her mum, stepdad, eight-year-old sister, her husband, Yoel, and their two-year-old daughter, Elise, when the shooting unfolded. No firearms were found, but police said three bullet casings were uncovered at the scene.

In a tweet, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said "the perpetrators of this senseless violence are being tracked down and the NYPD will bring them to justice".

Police commissioner Shea didn't blame the gun as de Blasio did, but rather pointed the finger at the city's elimination ofcash bail for nearly all offenses except for violent felonies.

A preliminary investigation showed that the three victims were unknown to one another and were innocent bystanders, Shea said. "When is this going to end?"

"Her husband was reportedly holding their 2-year-old when she was stuck by a bullet. It's the greatest, most wonderful city in the world, but we need help", said Shea.
