US border authorities encountered almost 19,000 unaccompanied children in March, the highest on record. "If you come to our border, you will be turned back", she said.

Harris created an uproar in an interview with NBC News that aired on Tuesday, when she couldn't answer why she hasn't visited the southern border.

But they often do so "either because they are fleeing some harm or because they simply can not satisfy their basic needs by staying at home", she added.

Following Monday's talks with Giammattei, Harris attempted to send a clearer message to Central Americans who might be considering an attempt to get into the USA illegally: "Do not come".

Harris, a Democratic former U.S. senator from California, responded to Republican criticism against her for not visiting the U.S. -Mexico border and the administration for ignoring what they say is a crisis there.

"Republicans and conservatives are going insane on Twitter", Times reporter Katie Rogers said during Tuesday's White House briefing with press secretary Jen Psaki.

"First, seeking asylum at the USA border is a 100% legal way to arrive", she said in the 2018 primary, influential on the Democratic left, widely known as the AOC. The United States will continue to enforce our laws and secure our border.

But some Democrats criticised the vice president Monday when she delivered a direct message to those considering leaving their homes and making the often unsafe trek to the US border: "Do not come".

In a brief gaggle with traveling reporters Tuesday, Harris said the questions on the security of the border are legitimate but should share the equal weight with a focus on the root cause issues.

In addition, the US has committed about $130 million over the next three years to support workers and labor reforms.

Harris also met female entrepreneurs and held a roundtable with labor leaders in Mexico before heading back to Washington.

Her comments echoed those made by past US officials as they've tried to dissuade migrants from seeking to cross the border, as the USA faces unprecedented numbers of attempted border crossings.

"The main thing is that it's very important to show that the United States and Mexico are collaborating and trying to improve conditions on the ground among our neighbors because of the importance that the countries in Central America have for both of us", Zúñiga said.

US Vice President Kamala Harris said on Monday she had "robust" talks with Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei on fighting corruption to deter immigration from Central America and bluntly warned migrants to not come to the United States.

Harris engaged in two days of diplomacy in Guatemala and Mexico as part of the Biden administration's effort to stem the flow of people into the U.S.
