Tornado Rips Through Chicago Suburbs, Injuring at Least 5 and Destroying Homes

More damage reports are expected Monday morning.

Officials in nearby Woodridge village said the tornado landed late Sunday, damaging at least 75 buildings and damage assessments are underway. Some areas also had downed power lines and reported gas leaks. She was sitting on a driveway lawn chair before sunrise on Monday.

Severe thunderstorms tore through the Chicago area on Sunday night after the National Weather Service said that a "confirmed large and extremely unsafe tornado" had touched down near Woodridge, a village in IL, causing damage to the area. Her 16-year-old son, Nate, said he was watching TV when the storm swept through and he raced to help his mother get his three younger siblings to the basement. Residents near Darien and Burr Ridge, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) southwest of Chicago, were urged to take cover around 11:15 pm, the National Weather Service in Chicago said on Twitter.

The threat of wind damage remained for a few hours as the line of storms moved over northern IL and into northwestern IN, forecasters said.

A violent storm struck other parts of the Midwest, tornadoes damaged several buildings and destroyed power lines and trees in eastern Iowa on Sunday night.

There have been no reports of any serious injuries or fatalities.
